Today I've been reading Philip Whalen's poems
in Anne Waldman's Angel Hair Anthology.
Cozy inside, snow falling in Pennsylvania, another
version of Christmas:

DEMACHI

Lady leans over the table writing
Takarabune coffeeshop
Is there a large spider descending from her hair?
It swings in space just below her cheek
The top of a ball-point pen
"Santa Claus is coming/ To town!"

***

A funny trip to the other side of the square, from
Demachi Yanagi linoleum plastic noodle shop
The Pepsi Cola man has rice with his chuka soba
To America taped music red upholstery lilac or yellow shades
on hanging lamps
Christmas trees pinned to the walls
Tinsel yardage stars their sparkling guts
Descending blue glass balls.
Air conditioner flops and glitters them
Everybody drinks thick fruit nasty
